I rather suspect one of the problems with episodes 1-3 was that they were written by a committee rather than just Lucas which I felt made the plot creak too heavily. Does anyone know if this was true?
Some of the coincidences such as C3PO being constructed by Annakin, later Vader are just too much (for example).
Also you may remember there were 3PO types at cloud city, so Vader must have been doubly mad that someone had been copying his patent when he arrived to set a trap for Luke! LOL.
target256 I hear you.

Yeah, along the same lines, I had to roll my eyes when Chewy made an appearance in Episode III... as a General who was on speaking terms with Yoda no less.

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that one, completely unnecessary and not really in character with what 'follows' in episode IV, might just as well had a cheesy boy Han Solo saying 'C,mon you big 'ol dawg I wanna go home, not fight with this lil bogie!'
It was like tring to please all the people all the time type situation.

Strange but, for similar reasons, I thought Lucas wrote the first three (1-3) alone and had less editorial input than with the original three.

From the special edition DVD documentaries, it seems clear to me that, due to budget and time constraints, Lucas had to call in a lot of outside help for the original three (especially on the original Star Wars). That help seems to have greatly improved the overall quality (and cut away some of the fat--some of the early dialog was just lame). So, I had the feeling that, by being so secretive and controlling, Lucas produced inferior products with the more recent movies. I also feel he is much more aware of the marketing side than he was in his innocent youth 25 years ago, which is why some of the obvious gimmicks (the back-fired Jar-Jar Binks) and needless cameos (Chewy--I must say, like most of you, I cringed with the flimsy justification for showing the wookies).

That's my thought anyway.

No recent posts in here, thought I'd add my two cents.
Lucas was a notoriously bad writer and (to some extent) an uninspired director. He was good at eye candy, but that's about it. The original trilogy (4-6) had input from other people, which was why there was some good story there (esp. 5). The prequels (1-3) were mostly Lucas' work that he based off the backstory that had to be made to fully flush out 4-6.

4-6 was not written by Lucas thats why, Lucas provided the storylines and ideas plots ect, but he didnt write it.
whereas 1-3 he wrote himself. which is why 4-6 is better. No disrespect to Mr Lucas though. i do still enjoy 1-3, and I'm looking forward to seeing the new Animated movie.
